Data
Recovery
When asked "Do you have a
recovery system in place?" many people will answer "Yes, we back
up our data regularly." Unfortunately, this may not
protect you as completely as you may think. Data backup
and data recovery can be two different things.
Are you backing up the
right data?
The only way to be certain that you are getting everything
backed up properly is to do a complete backup (called an
"image") of every disk drive in your company. But doing so
every day is time consuming and impractical. You need a
well designed and practical backup/data recovery policy that
gets all valuable data without being too great a burden.
"I'm sorry, I was in a
big hurry last night to get to my kid's ball game."
Murphy's Law makes sure this will happen just when it will hurt
the most. A backup system needs to be automatic to be
effective.
What about data on individual
PCs and laptops?
Proper policies and
procedures can help prevent loss of data stored on PCs on your
network. But if your users have laptops, PDAs or other
portable devices, they may have valuable data (i.e. contact
information at an important client) that needs to be protected.
How about encrypted data?
Some of your "power users" may encrypt data to keep it more
private. But if that data is important to the company ,
then what happens when Mr./Ms. Power User leaves the company?
You need to have the proper policies in place to prevent or
recover from this type of data loss.
"HELP!!!"
Disaster can still strike, even if you have great policies and
procedures in place (maybe you back up every night, but just
lost that proposal you've worked all day on). The first
rule is "STOP USING THE COMPUTER AND CALL US." If you
accidentally deleted a file, then the less you use that
computer, the greater the chances we can get it back. We
have many years of experience and understand how your computers
organize and store data on the drives. Often we can
even recover your data if you've had a disk failure or formatted
a drive. |
